Before
After 181 plants across 11 native species installed in the 200 square foot bed. Matrix grasses — Little bluestem and Side-oats grama — are in place throughout, with Prairie smoke woven between them. Flowering perennials positioned for the season-long bloom sequence. The Smooth Serviceberry anchors one end of the bed, balancing the existing Shademaster Locust.
Planting areas: Main Pollinator Bed
The design works with natural processes: drought-adapted plants matched to the sandy soil, grasses and groundcovers forming the structural foundation, and species that establish slowly but create long-term stability.
The bed is organized in three layers. The matrix — little bluestem and side-oats grama, with prairie smoke weaving between them — provides the textural foundation. The structural layer anchors the bed at each end: the existing Shademaster Locust on one side, a new serviceberry on the other. Between them, flowering perennials provide continuous colour from late May through September, and structure through winter.
The rounded rectangle integrates both trees into a single planting and creates a soft landing for caterpillars beneath the canopy — something lawn cannot do.
